About the Apiary
DBKA have a Training Apiary situated by the Cromford canal in the Derwent Valley. We run 2 hives there within an apiary run by John Wilcock. The Training apiary was set up 5 years ago with the aim of giving potential beekeepers a chance to handle bees before they got bees of their own and also for new beekeepers to give them a chance to see other colonies as usually new beekeepers only have 1 colony and find it difficult to know what a ‘normal’ colony looks like.
Over the years we have also served beekeepers who have been keeping bees for 1 or 2 years but either want to know more or have lost their initial colony and without help will give up beekeeping, this is something we are keen to help with.
Once beekeepers are confident about the craft we encourage them to take their Basic Assessment and again we use the Training apiary for practice before the assessment and for the assessment itself.
We usually run 11 to 14 sessions a season and 2019 dates are:-
- 27th April
- 11th May
- 18th May
- 1st June
- 15th June
- 29th June

- One or 2 Tuesday evenings may be added depending on demand.
How the Training Apiary Works
The sessions are on Saturday mornings 10am to 12.30pm at Whatstandwell. We have 6 places available each session and about 1 week before each session I send out an email asking who is interested and the first 6 to reply get a place. As the season progresses anyone who has not been before gets priority. In reality we only have a short waiting list early on in the season and by June time there are usually plenty of places available so please don’t be put off if the first time you don’t get in. Also you can come more than once especially later in the season. There is no charge for the Training Apiary we only ask that you are members of DBKA.
How to Take Part
So if the Training Apiary is something you want to come to this season send me an email and I will put your name on the list to contact before each session. I DON’T bother emailing all members every month only those who wish to come. Please use the contact form on the “Email Us” page.
Looking forward to seeing you in the new season.
