DBKA have a Training Apiary situated by the Cromford canal in the Derwent Valley.\u00a0 We run 2 hives there within an apiary run by John Wilcock.\u00a0 The Training apiary was set up 5 years ago with the aim of giving potential beekeepers a chance to handle bees before they got bees of their own and also for new beekeepers to give them a chance to see other colonies as usually new beekeepers only have 1 colony and find it difficult to know what a \u2018normal\u2019 colony looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the\nyears we have also served beekeepers who have been keeping bees for 1 or 2\nyears but either want to know more or have lost their initial colony and\nwithout help will give up beekeeping, \nthis is something we are keen to help with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once beekeepers are confident about the craft we encourage them to take their Basic Assessment and again we use the Training apiary for practice before the assessment and for the assessment itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We usually run 11 to 14 sessions a season and 2019 dates are:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sessions\nare on Saturday mornings 10am to 12.30pm at Whatstandwell. We have 6 places available each session and\nabout 1 week before each session I send out an email asking who is interested\nand the first 6 to reply get a place. As\nthe season progresses anyone who has not been before gets priority. In reality we only have a short waiting list\nearly on in the season and by June time there are usually plenty of places\navailable so please don\u2019t be put off if the first time you don\u2019t get in. Also you can come more than once especially\nlater in the season. There is no charge\nfor the Training Apiary we only ask that you are members of DBKA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
